Sony announced the VAIO Flip earlier this week in India and the Japanese giant gave us the opportunity to experience the product first hand.

VAIO Flip looks like a regular notebook but its USP is revealed after you switch the ‘release’ button placed on the top of the keyboard. The release switch enables users to flip the display completely and transform it into a tablet or make the device act as a viewer.

Sony says the VAIO Flip will be available in three display sizes – 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch and all are equipped with Sony’s Triluminos display that has improved picture quality compared to a conventional LED display.

The build quality is top notch, which you’d expect from such a high-end product; there’s a backlit keyboard; the AC adapter features a USB port to charge a smartphone or a tablet; a dedicated USB sleep charge port that charges the device even when the laptop is turned off; an 8 megapixel camera (13-inch variant only); and 3-months of Sony Jive music app.

As for the rest of the hardware, the notebooks are powered either by Intel’s 4th generation Core i5 or i7 processor, 128GB SSD (13-inch) or 1TB Hybrid HDD, touchscreen support, Windows 8.1, integrated or discrete Nvidia GPU.

The only thing we think will work against this promising series is the price. The VAIO Flip range starts from the 13-inch model and it’s priced at Rs. 99,990. The 14-inch model comes in two options – one with integrated graphics will sell for Rs. 94,990 while the one with 1GB Nvidia graphics will go for Rs. 1,04,990. The 15-inch model with 2GB Nvidia graphics and Core i7 will sell for Rs. 1,19,990.

As an introductory offer, Sony will bundle its premium MDR XB-910A headphones worth Rs. 12,990 with the notebook
